IEC Meetings in Nuremberg on 13-23 September

International Standardisation remains a key pillar in COCIR’s activities as it is a key element in compliance with regulations in several countries around the globe. On 13-23 September, the IEC TC 62 International Standardisation Committee responsible for all the international standards on electromedical equipment will meet in Nuremberg, Germany. The IEC TC 62 Committee brings together around 1000 experts from 27 countries around the globe.

Working Group meetings will be held on 13-18 September then from 19-23 September the Committee meetings of IEC TC 62 take place. These meetings may approve decisions proposed by the working groups. Several COCIR company experts are participating actively in these meetings. COCIR Secretary General, member of the Chairman’s Advisory Group of IEC TC 62 (CAG IEC TC 62) will attend meetings on 20-23 September. COCIR, a Category A liaison of IEC TC 62, has released a liaison report which will be further disseminated in several of those committees.

The COCIR Liaison Report focuses on seven key recommendations to:

1. Stimulate the participation of countries currently not directly involved in IEC TC 62 work

2. Continue to focus on addressing regulatory requirements when developing standards

3. Approve the extension of the scope of the IEC TC 62

4. Ensure that the IEC 82304-1, the new product standard for standalone software, and the update of the IEC 62304 fit well within the existing landscape of standards

5. Continue to track IEC 80001-1 related documents

6. Resume IEC TC 62’s leading role in the development of standards relating to radiation protection

7. Implement a strict scheme to ensure that all collateral and particular standards become applicable

One of the most important topics will be the IEC TC 62 scope modification to deal with software, information technology and networks, as well as Amendment 1 to IEC 60601-1:2005. A more detailed report on the outcome of those meetings will be shared at the end of September.
