COCIR/EDMA Position Paper on REACH

COCIR and EDMA (European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association) have sent a joint statement to the European Parliament on the impact that the proposed chemicals legislation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) will have on the medical devices industry.

After many years of discussions, the process of adopting the REACH Regulation is coming to an end.  The European Parliament is expected to vote at second reading in plenary soon.  Recent amendments voted in the Environment Committee on 10 October increase the burden on the medical devices industry.

At first reading the Parliament proposed an amendment to exempt the medical devices industry in certain key areas.  This was rejected by the Council.  The second reading of the Environment Committee failed to pass the amendment to exempt medical devices.

COCIR and EDMA are calling on MEP’s to reconsider an exemption for the medical devices industry.
