BRUSSELS – 15 May 2024
The Medical Equipment Pro-active Alliance for Sustainable Healthcare launched new sustainability criteria for purchasing medical imaging equipment. COCIR is a proud founding member of the Alliance together with the HealthTrust Performance Group and Vizient. The criteria are the result of years of intense efforts and technical exchanges. They were developed based on research performed by the Global Electronics Council and feedback received during a public consultation last year.
The criteria are designed to provide companies and purchasers with a common understanding and guidance on how to improve the sustainability of medical imaging equipment. The almost 50 criteria address both the individual product and the supplier’s sustainability performance. Included areas range from climate change mitigation over the sustainable use of resources to corporate ESG performance.
COCIR Secretary General Annabel Seebohm welcomed the publication. She said “The launch of the sustainability criteria is another achievement in COCIR’s long-standing commitment to reducing the environmental impact of the sector. We are proud to support our members in their ambitions for decarbonisation, circularity, and overall sustainability.”.
Speaking at the launch event, COCIR President and Global Head of Government and Public Affairs with Philips, Jan-Willem Scheijgrond said; “Given the negative impact of climate change on public health, communities and society, the health sector must lead the response. Sustainable procurement is one of the key strategies that health systems and governments can adopt right now to reduce their environmental footprint – and therefore help to decarbonize healthcare.
Beyond offering a roadmap for sustainable procurement practices, I hope that this tool will serve as the starting point for innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement in the field of sustainability in healthcare. It is by working together that we can have the biggest impact.”
