COCIR is happy to launch this new category in its dedicate blog, to promote the added value of radiotherapy in cancer care.
We are very proud that major breakthroughs in the last 10 years allowed radiotherapy to evolve to be a key element of cancer care. Combinations of modern imaging techniques and radiotherapy allow tumors to be targeted with previously unimagined levels of accuracy, thereby contributing to improved patient outcomes and minimizing side effects in a cost-effective way.
Despite this, radiotherapy is still severely underfunded in cancer programs in Europe, with different access for patients in different EU countries. At the same time, the inequality in accessing to life saving radiotherapy technologies is also a serious concern worldwide, that needs to be addressed.
In the optic to promote the value of modern radiotherapy in Europe, COCIR established a partnership in 2015 with ESTRO, the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology, and participates in the Advisory Committee of the GIRO initiative, led by ESTRO, that aims at addressing the challenge of closing the global inequity gap in access to radiotherapy, promoting the conclusions of the Global Task Force on Radiotherapy for Cancer Control (GTFRCC)
COCIR industries are also dedicated to improving radiation safety and therefore collaborate with regulators in EU and Worldwide to increase safety of equipment, reduce dose, improve training and practices.
