Exploratory Process Champions Stakeholder Dialogue: Calls to Make Europe the Global Leader for Medical Devices
COCIR welcomes the report of the European Commission’s Exploratory Process on the Future of Medical Devices published on 28 January 2010. The Exploratory Process was coordinated by DG Enterprise and brought together all stakeholders, including COCIR, to identify the challenges facing the medical devices industry.

COCIR welcomes the report’s recognition of the health benefits, economic value and innovative potential that the medical technology sector brings to Europe. The report also comprehensively maps the opportunities and challenges facing the sector and has generated key themes for further Commission reflection and action.

The Members of the Exploratory Process endorsed the need for a clear political vision that recognises the importance of the medical device sector as a driver of sustainable healthcare and economic growth. The group agreed that the European Union should act to make Europe the global leader for medical devices by promoting innovation, efficiency and sustainable health outcomes. The outcome of this initiative is fully in line with the COCIR position outlined in our 2008 White Paper ‘Towards a sustainable healthcare model’.

COCIR Secretary General, Nicole Denjoy said “We commend the Commission on its approach to developing this high-level report with comprehensive stakeholder engagement and dialogue as this is the only way to really understand the needs and challenges of the healthcare technology sector in Europe. The Exploratory Process initiative summarises for policymakers what healthcare technology can do and how a strong sector in Europe can support the broader European aspiration that citizens live long and healthy lives. COCIR’s members stand ready to work together with the Commission, European Parliament and other key stakeholders to drive forward solutions for the issues identified.”
